However, if you have a new dog or puppy, start with a short distance, slow paced walk or just have a stroll in a park or a beach. Walking with your dog is supposed to be fun and healthy for both you and your dog so do not push your dog to its limit. Exercising your dog is much like people's workout at the gym. It must be focused on increasing the strength and stamina of you and your dog.
Most likely, your dog would have a lot of stop-overs just to sniff around, pee, or poo along the way so it would do you good to bring along lots of paper bags. Do not forget to bring water and watering bowl for your pup because like you, they get thirsty too and will have to drink water. Also remember that yours is not the only dog in the neighborhood. You would have to learn to deal with aggressive dogs along your walk and know remember the streets that has aggressive dogs.
A nice short leash would be essential at walks along side streets as it would keep your dog close to you and prevent him from getting run over by a car. Train your dog to walk by your side rather behind or in front of you; you do not want it to look like you are dragging or forcing your dog to take walk or or you are the one who is being dragged by your dog.
Moreover, walking your dog before training him actually makes him more focused thereby being able to remember the commands that you teach.
